Rooting used to be the price of a custom phone. Most of what people wanted is now available without it.
What you can change
- Launcher, grid size and gesture behaviour.
- Icon packs and fonts.
- Per-app notification rules.
- Automation of settings based on time or location.
- Default apps for browser, dialler and camera.
What still needs root
System-level ad blocking, removing preinstalled apps, and deep backup of app data. These are the remaining reasons, and each carries real risk.
What not to do
Disable system packages you do not recognise. A phone that boots to a black screen is a hard problem to fix without a computer.
The sensible limit
Change the surface, leave the system alone. A launcher plus a few automation rules delivers most of the benefit with none of the fragility.
Bottom line: customise what you look at daily, and stop before you touch what boots.
