Wi-Fi 7, Thread and ultra-wideband are frequently listed together and rarely explained. Each solves a distinct problem.
Wi-Fi 7
Higher throughput and, more usefully, better behaviour when many devices share an access point. Multi-link operation reduces latency spikes, which matters more than peak speed for video calls and gaming.
Thread
A low-power mesh for sensors and switches. It is not a Wi-Fi replacement; it is what makes battery-powered devices reliable and keeps automations working when the router reboots.
Ultra-wideband
Short-range, precise distance measurement. It powers item finders and phone-to-phone handoff. It is not for data transfer.
What to look for in practice
- A router that handles many clients, not one with the highest peak rate.
- A Thread border router if you are buying smart-home sensors.
- UWB only if you will use find-my features.
Bottom line: buy for reliability under load, not for the number on the box.
