Active noise cancellation is the most marketed and least comparable feature in audio. Two pairs quoting the same reduction can feel completely different.
Why the decibel number misleads
Manufacturers quote peak attenuation, frequently in a narrow band. Real rooms have low rumble, mid chatter and high-frequency clatter, and headsets trade these against each other. A pair that silences an aircraft cabin can be mediocre in a cafe.
What matters more
- Comfort over two hours, including clamp force and heat.
- Transparency mode quality, which you will use more than you expect.
- Call performance in wind, not in a quiet room.
- Battery life with ANC on, not off.
The features that age badly
Proprietary apps, firmware-dependent features and non-replaceable ear pads. A headset with replaceable pads and a standard cable outlives one with a companion app.
How to test in a shop
Play a recording of a busy room rather than silence, then switch ANC on and off. The difference you can hear in five seconds is the difference you will live with.
Bottom line: judge cancellation on the noise you actually encounter, not on the figure in the brochure.
